Homer Wells (Tobey Maguire) grows up in an orphanage in St. Clouds, where he is cared for by the orphanage's director, Dr. Wilbur Larch (Michael Caine), Homer grows up healthy and happy with the other orphans, and studies with Dr. Larch to master the art of medicine, especially gynecological surgery. One day, Lieutenant Wally Worthington (Paul Rudd) brings his fiancée Candy Kendall (Charlize Theron) to the orphanage for an abortion. After the operation, Homer asks Wally if he can show him the outside world, and Wally readily agrees. Homer and Candy fall in love with Wally as they spend time together, and soon after Wally leaves for Burma to fight in the war. On the other hand, Homer receives a letter from the orphanage. Dr. Larch wants him to come back to be his assistant, but Homer refuses, preferring to stay in the outside world. But Homer refuses, preferring to stay out in the world. At the same time, bad news arrives from Wally's front line, who is going home with a paralyzed lower body.
