US Army Sergeant John Kinley (Jake Gyllenhaal) is on his last tour of duty in Afghanistan, surveying the area with local interpreter Ahmed. Their unit is ambushed during a patrol and the two men are the only survivors. With the enemy in pursuit, Ahmed risks his life to carry the wounded Kinley through miles of rugged terrain to safety. Back on American soil, Kinley learns that Ahmed and his family have not been allowed to travel to America as promised and is determined to protect the friend and repay the favour by returning to the war zone to rescue Ahmed's family before the local militia arrive.
