CW Briggs (Woody Allen) is the best insurance investigator at the prestigious North Shore Insurance Company in 1940s New York, where his specialty is being able to read the minds of criminals to solve cases with ease. All that changes when the boss brings in Betty, the "efficiency expert". Briggs is the first to be fired when Betty's new boss brings in new plans and new ways of managing. There is a lot of fireworks between the two. At their colleague George's birthday party, the two are called on stage by a magician and under the magic of the Jade Scorpion, they are hypnotised and wake up ignorant of what has just happened.Then there is a spate of jewel thefts around town, and the alarm device for the stolen jewels is set by Briggs himself and impossible to break without him. In the midst of investigating the case, the Kensington family's eccentric daughter (Charlie Theron) offers to ask him out on a date and he suspects her motives. He is further upset when Betty brings in a detective to assist him in his investigation.Betty is the lover of her boss and is doubly upset by his delay in divorcing his wife. Briggs suspects that Betty has leaked company secrets, and then Betty's advances on him reinforce his suspicions.It takes a series of laughs and hilarity before it is finally remembered that it all started with the magic of the jade scorpion and that these thefts have ended up setting up a match made in heaven.
