In the late Victorian era, there was an atmosphere of seriousness and hypocrisy in the society. John (Colin Firth), a young man who complains that life is too dull, comes up with the funny idea of "playing two roles in one", telling everyone around him that he is going to visit his brother Ernest in the city, thus leaving his country house; once in the city's social circles, John names himself Ernest.
