In 1949, the war in the Pacific is over and Freddie Jacqui (Joaquin Phoenix), plagued by military boredom, finally returns to the U.S. However, his psychiatric treatment before returning home gives him no real help, and Freddie falls into a trance-like, dull experience of life that he cannot extricate himself from. The following year, after a series of job failures, Freddy meets the complexly experienced "guru" Custer (Philip Seymour Hoffman) on a passenger ship he boarded while drunk. Custer's spiritual healing method, based on time theory, intrigues Freddy, who is "seduced" by Custer into opening up and seeking solutions to his problems, and becomes increasingly close to Custer's loosely-knit "Karmic" group, advocating for it and fighting against dissidents. He becomes closer and closer to Custer's loose-knit "Marxist" organization, shouting for it and fighting against dissidents. During the "therapy" process, Freddy's relationship with Custer becomes more and more complicated...
