The movie tells the true and bizarre story of Churchill's Secret Warfare Unit, which used unconventional and completely “ungentlemanly” combat techniques to fight the Nazis and change the course of the war. The story takes place in 1940 during World War II, when Germany continued to bomb Britain and use U-boats to sabotage British supply lines. Some members of the British government advocate surrender, but Churchill is determined not to admit defeat, but to change the rules of war and fight back strongly. According to intelligence, the German Atlantic U-boat fleet was maintained, repaired, and armed in a small Nigerian port. Churchill saw an opportunity to destroy German war assets and regain the upper hand. However, realizing that a direct attack on this Spanish colony could lead to a Spanish-German alliance, he assembles a secret operational detachment, led by Captain Gus March Phillips (Henry Cavill), to launch a covert operation to destroy the fleet. When the initially planned operation to blow up the fleet is rendered impossible by the sturdiness of the ships and the shallow waters of the harbor, the detachment quickly devises a plan to steal the ships. Their daring operation is a success, destroying a vital part of Hitler's war machine and reopening supply lines to Britain, thus hastening Germany's defeat
