Originally living in New York's Queens borough, Jewish girl Fran Van is dumped by her Italian boyfriend and boss at the beginning of the story and is forced to sell cosmetics to a well-to-do family on Manhattan's Upper East Side. The head of the household is Broadway producer Maxwell Sheffield, a widower of English aristocratic descent with three children. Mistaking her for a nanny job, Max mistakenly begins Fran's hilarious life in the Sheffield household.
