The story takes place at the time of the American War of Independence. Benjamin (Mel Gibson) is a French-American who has fought in the French and Indian War and has been through many battles. The brutal war caused him to lose his beloved wife and he vowed to stay away from war forever.So when the British colonists burned the war to Benjamin's home, his first choice was not to rise up and fight, but to hide. When he saw his oldest son join the locally organized Patriot Army, he didn't follow suit and stand up for himself either.However, when his oldest son was captured by the enemy and his youngest son was killed while standing up to save his brother, Benjamin could not hold back any longer. He then clearly realized that only resistance can save his home from the fire.
