Tom (David Strathairn) and Gail (Meryl Streep) are estranged as a couple, and in an effort to try to mend the seams, they decide to take their son Roarke (Joseph Mazzello) and their dog on a rafting adventure trip --Gail once braved the treacherous three-river confluence of the Iron Glove.Along the way they meet Wade (Kevin Bacon), Terry (John C. Reilly), and Frank, and Wade's petty maneuvers have Roarke promoting him as a hero. However, Frank disappears midway through the movie for no apparent reason, and suddenly Wade and Terry reveal their hideous true colors - they're criminals on the run who have absconded with a huge robbery and are on the run.Wade uses Tom and Roarke as hostages and threatens Gail to take them across the gauntlet, Tom escapes by mistake and prepares for an ambush with his dog downstream, where brave Gail will take on the gauntlet for a second time, and to save her son. Tom and Gail, who have been waiting downstream for a long time, join forces not only to fight, but also to feel the love of sharing the same pain once again.
