In order to be able to write in peace, Jack (Steven Weber) takes his wife Wendy (Rebecca De Mornay) and son Danny (Courtland Mead) to a remote, snow-clad mountain hotel, where they are to spend the entire winter season in an empty, ornate cottage. Jack laughs off the horrific legend that the previous manager of the hotel suddenly went mad and brutally murdered his wife and child with an axe.Life in the hotel is cosy and comfortable, and just as everyone is fading away from the horror legend, Danny discovers some phenomena that science can't conjure up. The inexplicable appearance of the room, the ghosts, the crowd gathered in the midnight bar and the strange waiters, all show that the house is not unusual. Even more frightening, Jack seems to be attracted and changed by some unknown force, and he begins to become brutal.
