As the sun blazes down on the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, a priceless painting by the Impressionist master Monet is stolen while it is on display. Sophisticated burglary methods, coupled with an infrared surveillance system that has been rendered completely ineffective by the heat, all add to the mystery of the theft. Billionaire Thomas Crowne (Pierce Brosnan) is a wealthy businessman and collector. When money can no longer bring him any fulfillment, the only things that can arouse his interest are those that money can't buy, such as this priceless treasure. The theft is the sole responsibility of Catherine Banning (Rene Russo), a beautiful and intelligent female investigator. At the same time, the police send the shrewd Officer Michael McGann (Denis Leary) to investigate the case. Banning and McGann coincidentally name Crowne as their number one suspect, and Crowne is even more intrigued by this extraordinary woman.
