In the mid-16th century, the English ambassador to France was assassinated and the dead man was the uncle of the young English king Henry VIII (Jonathan Rhys Meyers). This makes the king extremely angry and he immediately summons his ministers to prepare an army for France. However, Cardinal Wolking (Sam Neill) weighs up the interests of all sides and does not favour a war between England and France. He therefore finds a way to get the King of England and the King of France to settle the matter by negotiation. As Queen Catherine only bore Henry VIII a daughter, she fell out of favour with him. Henry VIII was always angry about this and sought pleasure within the court. However, it was a lady-in-waiting named Ann Boleyn (Natalie Dormer), who was so beautiful and voluptuous that she drove him mad. In order to marry her, Henry VIII conspires with Bishop Wolking to divorce the Queen, a move that immediately involves diplomatic and religious interests. In the meantime, the fever spreads, causing a national panic and a court shakeup...
