The film is based on a short story of the same name by American writer Jim Shepard released in 2017. Set in the 19th century in the Northeast, the story follows a farmer's wife and her new neighbors' wives, Taille (Vanessa Kirby) and Abigail (Katherine Waterston), who are drawn to each other as they unknowingly fill in the blaps in their lives.
