Zamperini (Jack O'Connell) is a long-distance runner who loves his sport and was lucky enough to compete in the 1936 Berlin Olympics.In 1939, World War II breaks out, and the hesitant Zamperini enlists in the military to serve his country by becoming an air force bombardier.
During a mission, an accident caused the fighter plane Zamperini was piloting to crash at sea, and he and his comrades spent 47 grueling and long days in a tiny life raft, but when they were rescued, the nightmare had just begun. Zamperini becomes a prisoner of a hostile Japanese nation and befriends an officer named Mutsuhiro Watanabe (Takaya Ishihara) in a concentration camp, where Zamperini is subjected to inhumane torture and beatings, an experience that, despite his survival, leaves an indelible scar on his psyche. The war is over, but Zamperini's nightmare doesn't end there.
