Max Records, a young boy with no outlet for his energy, is angry at the neglect of his sister Claire (Idolatrous Pepita Emmerichs) and the discipline of his mother (Catherine Keener). In a quarrel with his mother, Max ran away from home, to the river alone in a boat, in the sea for two days and two nights, arrived at a mysterious island. The island is populated by tall, horned, furry monsters, some grumpy, some meek, and some timid. To avoid being eaten, Max tricked the monsters into thinking he was the King of the Vikings and came to the island to be their king. The simple monsters believe in Max and cheerfully make him their king, building a new home on the island. But what surprises Max is the conflict between the monster Carlo (James Gandolfini) and KW (Lauren Ambrose).
