Jamie (Maggie Gyllenhaal) raises her daughter, Maria (Emily Alyn Lind), alone and is a strong single mom; however, Maria is bullied at school because of a slight speech impediment, and even her teachers join the queue to mock her.Nona (Viola Davis) is a teacher who has smoothed out her sharpness over her long years of teaching.
